Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior IT Engineer to provide techno-functional leadership and technical oversight for SAP solutions supporting a large-scale enterprise Customer Transformation program. This is a six-month contract-to-hire opportunity designed for a senior SAP professional who can bridge functional business requirements with technical solution delivery.

The day-to-day focus of the role will include SAP solution design reviews, fit-gap analysis, configuration and customization assessment, integration oversight, and test-result reviews. A key responsibility will be identifying opportunities to leverage SAP standard functionality and industry best practices before introducing custom development.

The environment includes SAP S/4HANA, SAP BTP / Integration Suite, SAP Service Cloud (C4C), FICA, BASIS, ABAP, standard SAP APIs, legacy BAPIs, and related enterprise integrations. The Senior IT Engineer will collaborate with internal technology teams, business stakeholders, systems integrators, and third-party vendors to ensure SAP solutions are scalable, secure, supportable, and aligned with enterprise architecture and program requirements.

The strongest candidates will bring deep SAP solution delivery experience along with the ability to critically evaluate proposed designs, challenge unnecessary customization, guide testing, manage integration dependencies, and support successful deployment and operational transition.

Key Responsibilities

SAP Techno-Functional Design & Solution Oversight

  • Provide techno-functional oversight for SAP solution design, configuration, development, integration, and testing activities.

  • Review solution designs to ensure alignment with SAP best practices, enterprise standards, and business requirements.

  • Conduct and support fit-gap analysis to determine whether business requirements can be met through standard SAP capabilities or require configuration, extension, or customization.

  • Identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary customization and promote scalable, maintainable SAP solutions.

  • Review technical and functional designs produced by internal teams, systems integrators, and other third-party partners.

  • Provide technical guidance and recommendations throughout the solution delivery lifecycle.

SAP S/4HANA & Customer Transformation

  • Collaborate on end-to-end SAP functional and technical oversight for Meter-to-Cash (M2C) and Customer Service processes.

  • Support solutions involving SAP S/4HANA Utilities, SAP Service Cloud / C4C, FICA, billing, customer account processes, and related SAP capabilities.

  • Ensure SAP solutions support business requirements while maintaining appropriate integration across the broader Customer Transformation ecosystem.

  • Partner with functional and technical SMEs to identify process, configuration, data, and integration dependencies.

  • Help resolve design gaps and technical issues that could affect customer, billing, payment, or service processes.

SAP BTP & Integration

  • Support solution delivery using SAP BTP and SAP Integration Suite.

  • Review integrations involving standard SAP APIs, RESTful APIs, legacy BAPIs, middleware platforms, and non-SAP systems.

  • Help ensure appropriate integration patterns, error handling, monitoring, security, and supportability.

  • Coordinate across workstreams to ensure SAP solutions integrate effectively with other enterprise technologies, including identity and access management platforms.

  • Support integration with non-SAP products such as MuleSoft, API management platforms, and related enterprise services.

RICEFW & Development Oversight

  • Oversee progress and quality of SAP-specific RICEFW deliverables, including Reports, Interfaces, Conversions, Enhancements, Forms, and Workflows.

  • Ensure RICEFW objects remain traceable to approved business and program requirements.

  • Review ABAP development and related technical deliverables where appropriate.

  • Assess proposed customizations and extensions against available standard SAP functionality.

  • Support code, configuration, interface, and technical design reviews.

  • Coordinate with development teams to address quality, performance, or design concerns.

Testing & Quality Assurance

  • Provide technical oversight for SAP testing activities, including:

    • Unit testing

    • System Integration Testing (SIT)

    • User Acceptance Testing (UAT)

    • Regression testing

    • Performance testing

  • Review test strategies, test scenarios, results, defects, and supporting evidence.

  • Ensure test coverage appropriately addresses business requirements, integrations, security, performance, and exception scenarios.

  • Help identify root causes of defects and coordinate resolution across functional, development, integration, and vendor teams.

  • Ensure test activities and results are documented in tools such as Jira and qTest.

  • Support readiness decisions based on testing outcomes and unresolved risks.

SAP Security, GRC & Compliance

  • Ensure SAP security roles and access models are appropriately designed, implemented, and tested.

  • Support alignment with SAP GRC Access Control, enterprise security standards, and internal compliance requirements.

  • Review role design, access requirements, and segregation-of-duties considerations.

  • Coordinate with security and IAM teams to ensure appropriate integration between SAP and enterprise identity solutions.

  • Support compliance requirements related to customer information, financial processes, and data privacy.

  • Identify security or access risks and coordinate mitigation activities.

DevSecOps & Engineering Standards

  • Promote adherence to SAP-standard DevSecOps practices throughout solution delivery.

  • Support automated CI/CD pipelines, testing automation, code quality controls, and deployment processes.

  • Encourage appropriate unit-test coverage and automated quality gates.

  • Support static and dynamic security analysis for SAP applications and configurations.

  • Work with engineering teams to improve consistency, repeatability, and quality across development and deployment activities.

  • Identify opportunities to improve delivery through automation and standardized engineering practices.

Deployment, Cutover & Hypercare

  • Support deployment planning, cutover execution, production readiness, and go-live activities.

  • Help coordinate technical dependencies and deployment sequencing across SAP and integrated systems.

  • Participate in production validation and stabilization following releases.

  • Support hypercare activities and resolution of production issues.

  • Facilitate knowledge transfer to operational teams and managed service providers.

  • Mentor internal resources to strengthen long-term SAP operational and technical capabilities.

SAP Monitoring & Operational Readiness

  • Help establish industry-standard SAP monitoring and operational support practices.

  • Support monitoring related to:

    • Errors and failed transactions

    • Interfaces and integrations

    • Application performance

    • Abnormal system usage

    • Availability and operational health

  • Ensure appropriate support processes and escalation paths are established prior to production transition.

  • Identify monitoring gaps and recommend improvements to operational readiness.

Vendor & Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Coordinate with third-party service providers, systems integrators, and vendors to ensure timely and high-quality SAP delivery.

  • Review vendor-produced designs, configurations, development, integrations, and testing outputs.

  • Facilitate collaboration across SAP, application, infrastructure, security, IAM, data, and business workstreams.

  • Challenge proposed solutions constructively when they do not align with business requirements or SAP best practices.

  • Drive issues and technical decisions toward timely resolution.

Program Governance & Risk Management

  • Participate in program governance, status reporting, risk management, and issue resolution.

  • Identify technical risks, dependencies, design gaps, and delivery concerns.

  • Communicate technical issues clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Support decision-making by presenting options, tradeoffs, and recommendations.

  • Maintain visibility into SAP delivery progress, open issues, risks, and upcoming milestones.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Review SAP functional and technical solution designs.

  • Conduct fit-gap discussions and evaluate standard SAP functionality versus proposed customization.

  • Review configuration, ABAP development, RICEFW objects, APIs, integrations, and technical documentation.

  • Review test scenarios, results, defects, and readiness across SIT, UAT, regression, and performance testing.

  • Participate in design and technical working sessions with SAP teams, business stakeholders, and systems integrators.

  • Coordinate across SAP S/4HANA, BTP, C4C, FICA, security, IAM, data, and integration teams.

  • Track technical risks, design issues, dependencies, and action items.

  • Support deployment, cutover, hypercare, and operational transition activities.

  • Review SAP security and GRC requirements.

  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to internal teams.

  • Participate in program status, governance, architecture, and delivery meetings.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 7 years of SAP solution delivery experience, including design, configuration, development, integration, and testing activities.

  • Strong experience with SAP S/4HANA.

  • Experience with SAP BTP and/or SAP Integration Suite.

  • Proven experience supporting SAP implementations within complex, multi-vendor enterprise environments.

  • Strong functional and technical understanding of SAP products and enterprise SAP solution delivery.

  • Experience with one or more specialized SAP areas such as FICA, Billing, Regulatory, SAP Service Cloud / C4C, or related customer-facing SAP processes.

  • Experience conducting solution design reviews and fit-gap analysis.

  • Ability to evaluate standard SAP capabilities versus configuration, extension, and custom development requirements.

  • Experience with integration technologies, including RESTful APIs and middleware platforms.

  • Experience supporting SAP testing across unit testing, SIT, UAT, regression, and performance testing.

  • Familiarity with DevSecOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and code-quality controls.

  • Understanding of SAP security models and SAP GRC Access Control.

  • Strong communication, facilitation, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to coordinate effectively across technical teams, business stakeholders, vendors, and systems integrators.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Administration, or a related field.

  • SAP certifications such as SAP Certified Associate, SAP Certified Professional, or related credentials.

  • Experience supporting utility or energy industry digital transformation programs.

  • Experience with Meter-to-Cash, customer service, billing, payments, or utility customer systems.

  • Hands-on knowledge of ABAP programming.

  • Experience with SAP Service Cloud / C4C.

  • Experience with SAP BASIS.

  • Experience with SAP GRC.

  • Experience integrating non-SAP technologies with SAP, including MuleSoft, API architectures, IAM platforms, or similar technologies.

They will also bring the communication skills and judgment needed to work across NiSource teams, third-party delivery partners, and senior program stakeholders throughout design, testing, deployment, and operational transition.
