Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Maintenance Technical Support professional to support maintenance planning, technical troubleshooting, procedure development, work execution, and equipment reliability in a power plant environment. This role will work closely with the Maintenance Supervisor to develop processes and procedures, plan maintenance work, answer technical questions, and support safe, reliable, and compliant plant operations.
The ideal candidate will bring a strong technical background in power plant equipment, systems, and operations, with particular strength in instrumentation and controls. This individual should understand maintenance management practices, predictive maintenance techniques, safety expectations, environmental compliance requirements, and the relationship between mechanical, electrical, and controls systems.
This is a fully onsite, contract-to-hire role suited for someone who can operate in both a technical support and field-facing capacity while coordinating with maintenance, operations, engineering, and plant leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance Technical Support & Procedure Development
- Work with the Maintenance Supervisor to develop, refine, and document maintenance processes and procedures.
- Provide technical support to maintenance personnel, operations teams, and plant leadership.
- Answer technical questions related to plant equipment, systems, troubleshooting, maintenance scope, and repair timing.
- Develop and maintain maintenance procedures, work practices, and technical guidance to support consistent execution.
- Support continuous improvement of maintenance practices, planning processes, and equipment reliability procedures.
Safety & Environmental Compliance
- Maintain a safe work environment by reinforcing safe work practices across assigned work activities.
- Inspect job sites and review maintenance procedures for potential hazards.
- Conduct pre-job safety briefs for assigned work.
- Communicate safety rules, expectations, and regulations to employees and contractors.
- Consistently enforce safety requirements and promote accountability for safe work execution.
- Place high priority on environmental equipment and systems maintenance to support compliance with environmental permits and procedures.
- Ensure crafts and contractors understand and follow environmental procedures when performing maintenance work.
Maintenance Planning & Work Coordination
- Support planning and coordination of maintenance work in partnership with the Maintenance Supervisor and plant teams.
- Coordinate with Operations, Engineering, and Plant Management to develop effective repair strategies and maintenance schedules.
- Determine appropriate maintenance scope and timing of repairs based on equipment condition, operating needs, and plant priorities.
- Assist operating departments with equipment monitoring and troubleshooting of abnormal operating conditions.
- Support development of work plans, repair strategies, maintenance schedules, and technical approaches for plant equipment and systems.
Equipment Reliability & Predictive Maintenance
- Utilize predictive maintenance techniques such as thermography, vibration analysis, ultrasound, and tribology to support equipment reliability.
- Help identify equipment issues, trends, and risks before they result in operational impacts.
- Support root cause analysis and corrective action planning for equipment issues.
- Apply working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation maintenance procedures and work practices.
- Assess how mechanical, electrical, and controls systems interact and influence equipment performance.
Budgeting, Cost Tracking & Project Support
- Develop budget requests for plant equipment and systems maintenance and capital improvements.
- Submit initiatives that define project purpose, scope, estimated cost, benefits, and implementation approach.
- Follow through with implementation of approved projects and maintenance initiatives.
- Control and track department expenses to support operation within budget.
- Forecast expenses on a monthly basis.
- Manage multiple maintenance-related projects, priorities, and technical initiatives at one time.
Training, Performance Standards & Team Support
- Communicate work performance standards and expectations to employees.
- Train and evaluate employees in the proper use of tools, machinery, maintenance procedures, maintenance practices, and safe work methods.
- Encourage strong maintenance discipline, teamwork, and accountability.
- Support knowledge transfer across maintenance personnel and plant teams.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, peers, subordinates, contractors, and cross-functional stakeholders.
Emergency Response & Operational Support
- Respond to emergency calls outside normal work schedule on a regular basis.
- Provide technical support during emergent maintenance issues, abnormal operating conditions, and equipment failures.
- Coordinate with operations and maintenance teams to assess issues, determine next steps, and support timely resolution.
- Help ensure maintenance response activities are safe, technically sound, and aligned with plant operating needs.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Work with the Maintenance Supervisor to plan work, develop procedures, and resolve technical questions.
- Review job sites, work scopes, and maintenance procedures for hazards and execution readiness.
- Conduct pre-job safety briefs and reinforce safe work practices.
- Coordinate with Operations, Engineering, and Plant Management on repair strategies and maintenance schedules.
- Support troubleshooting of plant equipment and abnormal operating conditions.
- Assist with predictive maintenance activities, including thermography, vibration analysis, ultrasound, and tribology.
- Develop budget requests, track expenses, and support monthly forecasting.
- Train employees on tools, machinery, procedures, and safe work practices.
- Support capital improvement and maintenance initiatives from planning through implementation.
- Respond to emergency maintenance calls outside normal scheduled hours as needed.
Required Qualifications
- 4+ years of experience in maintenance, engineering, power plant operations, industrial process environments, military service, or a related technical discipline.
- Strong technical background and understanding of power plant equipment, systems, and operations.
- Instrumentation and controls background.
- Commitment to maintaining safe work practices.
- Ability to utilize predictive maintenance techniques such as thermography, vibration analysis, ultrasound, and tribology.
- Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and/or instrumentation maintenance procedures and work practices.
- Understanding of maintenance management processes.
- Ability to manage several projects at one time.
- Ability to communicate effectively through a variety of media with supervisors, peers, subordinates, contractors, and stakeholders.
- Familiarity with multiple maintenance disciplines and understanding of the relationship between mechanical, electrical, and controls equipment.
- Ability to work fully onsite in Wheatfield, IN.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in power plant operating departments.
- Formal training or experience in project management.
- Formal training or experience in maintenance management practices.
- Experience supporting maintenance planning, procedure development, troubleshooting, and repair strategy development in a power generation or heavy industrial environment.
- Experience developing maintenance budgets, capital improvement initiatives, and monthly expense forecasts.
- Experience training maintenance employees or craft personnel on procedures, tools, equipment, and safe work practices.
